In this episode

  • Our first invited roast: they actually asked us to do this, which we respect, because what we found was a mess.
  • The entire website is basically one page. Three of the four menu items just scroll you around the homepage, and the menu stops working the moment you leave it.
  • We found the worst header situation in show history: blog titles marked up as H1s, repeated three and four times per page, with hidden duplicated copy that even carries typos.
  • One hardcoded button duplicated the whole homepage onto a trailing slash URL, a canonical problem the site built for itself.
  • The sitemap exposed orphan author pages complete with a work email, on a site that never shows a single face or author anywhere.

Key findings

  • The homepage carries multiple H1s plus hidden duplicate content with typos that never renders on the page.
  • Blog post titles are marked up as H1s and repeat three to four times on every page of the site, a sitewide template bug.
  • Internal anchor buttons append trailing slashes to the URL, effectively duplicating the homepage under new addresses with no canonical handling.
  • The sitemap contains orphan pages and hidden author pages that expose an email address, while published articles display no author at all.
  • The homepage is stacked with unnecessary schema, web page, image object, breadcrumbs, and website markup where an organization schema alone would do, alongside dead footer social links, a broken accessibility widget, and a gray on black privacy policy nobody could read.

Top action items

  • 1Fix the header hierarchy sitewide, one H1 per page, and strip out all the hidden duplicated content.
  • 2Build real product pages and a genuine about page with names, faces, and social profiles.
  • 3Redirect the duplicate trailing slash URLs, noindex the orphan pages, and remove the exposed email from the author pages.
  • 4Remove the category pages until there is enough content to justify them.

What we learned (steal these)

  • Fix the technical fundamentals before you even think about content marketing. Broken menus and duplicate H1s make everything after them pointless.
  • A one page website gives Google almost nothing to rank. Product pages, an about page, and real content are the minimum entry fee.
  • Your sitemap is public. Anything sitting in it, orphan pages, hidden author profiles, email addresses, is findable by anyone who looks.
